Melissa Sexton started attending home births in 2003 and continued working as an apprentice and midwife's assistant for the Home Birth Midwifery Service, in Memphis, TN, (now located in Richmond, VA) until 2008. Melissa practiced in Memphis, TN from 2008- 2010 as a senior midwife with Full Circle Midwifery. In the fall of 2010, Melissa established Meadowsweet Midwifery to serve the home birth community here in the Denver Metro area.
A home birth mother of four children, (1998, 2000, 2002 and 2011) she understands the needs and choices of her clientele very well. Her personal experience as a home birth midwifery consumer and her passion for herbal and holistic medicine challenged her to pursue her goal to serve families as a home birth midwife.
When she is not working with other families she is on the go with her kids and helping others in the midwifery community. She loves cooking, gardening, and enjoying the outdoors with her family. Her husband Bryan "Chris" Sexton works at Delta Airlines. His job encouraged their family to make the move to Denver in 2010 and Melissa happily became part of the community of Denver homebirth midwives.
Throughout the years she has attended many workshops and conferences on pregnancy, birth, and holistic care. She has dedicated many hours to organizations in the mid-south to promote home birth and gentle births in the hospital setting.
Melissa earned her NARM CPM credential in March 2009. She is a registered midwife (RM) in the state of Colorado. Melissa is certified in CPR and Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) and is a member of MANA and NARM.
She has been serving as the President of the Colorado Midwives Association since 2018. Melissa is grateful for the opportunity to serve the midwife community and to help protect home birth as a choice for Colorado women.
Samantha Venn has been studying birth and midwifery since 2008, following the empowering VBAC of her second child. In 2009 she completed a 3-day workshop with ToLabor and began practicing as a doula. Midwifery remained the focus and where she directed the energy of her studies while having 4 babies, including a surrogate baby in 2017, at home. She has attended hundreds of hours of workshops, conferences, and study groups in her years of studying before beginning as an apprentice midwife. She maintains certification in Basic Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation.
Melissa brought Samantha into her practice in January 2018. In the summer Samantha also joined the Colorado Midwives Association as Social Media Chair. She has completed phases one and two of the National Registry of Midwives Portfolio Evaluation Process and is working through phase three before being able to test for her Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) credential.
In her free time Samantha spends most of her time enjoying family life, a caretaker at heart, family means everything to her. She lives in the Lakewood/Golden area with her husband of 15 years and their children ages 4 years-13 years, her mom who is recovering from a stroke, as well as 2 dogs, and a cat. You can find them most often at playgrounds, amusement parks, lakes, and rivers. Together they love board games, funny movies, anything science fiction, and mostly finding ways to make each other laugh and have fun even in the most ordinary moments.
